Tea tree Forest Binalong Bay

Based on the remote east coast of Tasmania, singer songwriter, guitarist and percussionist Marita Mangano released her second CD ‘Just Like You’ in late 2023. Seven enticing original songs are invigorating expressions of freedom, passion and wild abandon. The new CD follows her first independent album ‘Binalong Blue’, another insightful collection of songs of people, places and life’s experiences.

‘Just Like You’, co-produced by guitarist, multi-instrumentalist Pete Cornelius who also played on ‘Binalong Blue’ is joined by four other leading Tasmanian musicians on the new recording.

Another contributing player is legendary pianist Peter Head who performed duo shows with Marita in Sydney when she lived there twenty-five years ago. Sydney saxophonist Janet Levy features too and had worked with Marita in Love Monkeys, a late nineties acid jazz Sydney funk act. The other band at that time with which Marita sang lead was the Latin rock outfit Black Market. Their leader guitarist Bill Kelly followed Marita in moving south and has regularly backed her in Tasmania.

Violinist on ‘Just Like You’ CD Sue Ferrers, like Marita was a member of original Brisbane Celtic folk rock band Natives Of Bedlam led by songwriter, guitarist and film maker Evan Clarry. The Natives released their album ‘The Sound Of Bedlam’ in 1993 and toured nationally.

Brisbane was Marita’s hometown; born in Deception Bay with Sicilian heritage. It was in Brisbane that she first sang solo, including at the inaugural Women In Voice with guitarist Jamie Clark.

These days Marita accompanies herself on guitar for her regular Tasmanian performances and twice yearly forays to Brisbane sometimes supported by other musicians on a variety of instruments including drums, bass, keyboards and piano accordion.

Marita looks forward to sending her songs further afield live and recorded. She also performs unique interpretations of other compositions in a variety of styles including rock’n roll, jazz and soul, folk and country, blues, gospel and popular favourites.
